The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered all international matches hosted in Zimbabwe to be played behind closed doors following the death of a spectator during the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Harare.

The decision was announced by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda on Tuesday, who said CAF had temporarily suspended spectator access while it reviews safety and security arrangements at Zimbabwean stadiums.

“The nation is advised of the unfortunate death of a spectator which occurred during the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Harare,” Soda said.

CAF expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and to Zimbabwe before imposing the precautionary measure.

According to Soda, CAF said the suspension was necessary “pending a comprehensive review and verification of the relevant safety and security protocols”.

“All CAF matches to be played in Zimbabwe during the period of this suspension shall therefore be held behind closed doors until further notice,” he said.

The fatal incident occurred shortly after kick-off when a crowd reportedly stampeded following delays at the stadium gates.

The delays were reportedly linked to faulty ticket scanners installed by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), resulting in a build-up of supporters outside the stadium.

A police water cannon truck that had been deployed to control the situation subsequently ran over a supporter, killing him.

CAF's directive means Zimbabwe will temporarily host international football matches without spectators as the continental football governing body assesses the country's stadium safety and security measures.

The suspension is expected to affect upcoming CAF-sanctioned fixtures in Zimbabwe until the review is completed and the required safety measures are verified.
