Five men have appeared before the Bulawayo Western Commonage Regional Court after allegedly being caught transporting 360 kilograms of dagga with an estimated street value of ZiG10.8 million.
The accused, Gordon Nkomo (58), Nkosiyabo Moyo (57), Shepherd Nkomo (43), Beven Sibanda (40), and Isaiah Moyo (31), appeared before Regional Magistrate Pasipanodya Mathurure on Monday facing charges of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs in contravention of Section 156(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
The court heard that on 30 May 2026, police officers intercepted the five men at the 25-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Solusi Road while they were travelling in a vehicle towing a trailer.
According to prosecutor Christina Manyika, a search of the trailer led to the discovery of 18 plastic bags containing loose dagga weighing approximately 360 kilograms.
"The accused persons were intercepted while travelling in a vehicle towing a trailer carrying 360 kilogrammes of loose dagga with an estimated street value of ZiG10.8 million," Manyika told the court.
The recovered substance was later taken to the Bulawayo Main Post Office, where it was weighed in the presence of the accused. Authorities also seized the vehicle allegedly used to transport the consignment, which is being held as an exhibit.
The State indicated that investigations are still ongoing, with a forensic report to confirm the nature of the seized substance yet to be completed.
The accused are being represented by lawyer Stanley Chinyanganya.
Magistrate Mathurure remanded the matter to 10 June 2026 for further proceedings and the presentation of forensic findings. The five men remain in custody while awaiting the outcome of their bail application and ongoing investigations.
The case has attracted widespread public attention due to the large quantity of suspected dagga involved, with authorities continuing efforts to establish the source of the consignment and its intended destination.
