BHOPAL, INDIA – Indian authorities have arrested the mother-in-law of a 33-year-old bride whose death just five months into her marriage has sparked national outrage and intensified scrutiny of alleged dowry-related abuse.
Retired judge Giribala Singh was taken into custody on Thursday after the Madhya Pradesh High Court revoked her anticipatory bail. The arrest forms part of an ongoing investigation by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of model and actress Twisha Sharma.
Twisha was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal on 12 May. Her death quickly became a high-profile case due to the prominence of those involved and allegations that she was subjected to harassment over dowry demands.
Family members have accused Twisha's husband, lawyer Samarth Singh, and his mother of mistreating her during the short-lived marriage. They reject claims that her death was a suicide and have demanded a thorough investigation.
The Singh family has denied all allegations.
According to reports, the High Court cancelled Giribala Singh's bail after determining that key evidence and witness statements had not been adequately considered when the protection from arrest was initially granted.
Investigators questioned the former judge following her arrest as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Twisha's death.
Samarth Singh remains in custody after being arrested on 22 May. Authorities allege that he left the area following his wife's death before being apprehended by police.
Twisha's family has also challenged the findings of the initial post-mortem examination, arguing that it was inadequate. They successfully pushed for further scrutiny of the case, which has since been transferred to the CBI.
Police have rejected allegations of a cover-up.
The CBI is now leading the investigation and is expected to determine whether Twisha's death was a suicide or the result of foul play. The case continues to draw widespread public attention across India, with calls for justice growing louder as investigators seek answers.
