Mthwakazi Marks Mzilikazi Day with Colourful Commemorations

Bulawayo came alive over the weekend as thousands gathered to commemorate Mzilikazi Day, a cultural and historical event honouring the legacy of King Mzilikazi Khumalo, the founder of the Ndebele nation.

The commemorations, which took place at Mhlahlandlela on the outskirts of the city, were marked by traditional rituals, music, dance, and speeches that reflected on the history, unity, and identity of the Ndebele people. Cultural groups dressed in vibrant traditional attire performed isitshikitsha and amabhiza dances, while elders offered prayers for rain, peace, and prosperity.

Speaking at the event, traditional leaders and historians highlighted Mzilikazi’s vision, resilience, and leadership that laid the foundation of the Ndebele kingdom nearly two centuries ago. They urged younger generations to embrace their heritage and carry forward the values of courage and unity.

Mzilikazi Day, observed annually in September, has become an important cultural calendar event in Matabeleland, drawing participants from across Zimbabwe and beyond. For many, it is not just a remembrance of the past, but also a call to preserve and celebrate the rich traditions of the Ndebele nation.

As the sun set over Bulawayo, the sounds of drums and songs echoed through the gathering, a powerful reminder that the spirit of King Mzilikazi lives on in the hearts of his people.
