Tagwirei In Secret Tatenda Mavetera Birthday Gifts

By A Correspondent — Controversial businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei has revealed that he intends to give Information Communication Technology Minister Tatenda Mavetera a private birthday gift, sparking fresh public debate over the close relationship between politically connected business elites and senior government officials.

The remarks came during Mavetera’s 40th birthday celebrations, held just days after reports that Tagwirei’s son allegedly received wedding gifts worth more than US$200 million, including a fleet of luxury vehicles displayed at the lavish ceremony.

Speaking at the birthday event, Tagwirei reflected on Mavetera’s alleged humble beginnings, claiming that before entering mainstream politics she worked as a “money changer” in Harare during Zimbabwe’s prolonged economic crisis.Politics

Money changing became widespread in Zimbabwe during years of hyperinflation, currency collapse, and severe cash shortages, with many citizens relying on informal foreign currency trading to survive as the economy deteriorated.

Tagwirei told guests that Mavetera had risen from those difficult beginnings to become one of the country’s youngest cabinet ministers under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

In his speech, the businessman also praised Mavetera’s loyalty and close relationship with his family, describing her as someone who had remained grounded despite her rapid political rise within Zanu PF.

Tagwirei later hinted that he intended to give the minister a “special gift” privately, joking that he feared backlash from social media users if the gift became public knowledge.

Mavetera has emerged as one of the rising young political figures within Zanu PF since Mnangagwa came to power following the 2017 military-assisted removal of former President Robert Mugabe. She first gained national prominence as a youth activist and legislator before later being appointed ICT minister.Education policy analysis

Her political rise has largely been associated with her close alignment to Mnangagwa’s faction within the ruling party, where younger politicians loyal to the president have increasingly been elevated into influential government positions.

Meanwhile, Tagwirei remains one of Zimbabwe’s most controversial businessmen because of his close ties to Mnangagwa and his growing influence across key sectors of the economy, including fuel, mining, agriculture, finance, and infrastructure development.

The businessman rose to prominence through Sakunda Holdings, which became heavily involved in the government’s multi-billion-dollar Command Agriculture programme, introduced to revive food production. However, opposition parties and critics have long accused the programme of lacking transparency and becoming a vehicle for the abuse of public funds, allegations Tagwirei has repeatedly denied.

In 2020, the United States Treasury imposed sanctions on Tagwirei, accusing him of using his relationship with Mnangagwa and senior government officials to secure lucrative state contracts and gain preferential access to foreign currency. US authorities also alleged that billions of dollars linked to the Command Agriculture programme could not be fully accounted for.

Investigative reports by international anti-corruption organisations and media groups have also linked Tagwirei to controversial treasury bill deals, opaque business arrangements, and politically connected cartels accused of benefiting from Zimbabwe’s economic collapse.

Despite the controversies surrounding him, Tagwirei has continued to expand both his political and economic influence, frequently appearing alongside Mnangagwa at major state functions and government programmes, reinforcing perceptions that he has become one of the country’s most powerful unelected figures.
