Killer Seeks Sangoma’s Protection After Brutal Double Murder in Lions’ Den
By Staff Reporter
A suspected killer reportedly sought spiritual protection from a traditional healer after allegedly murdering an elderly couple at their farm in Lions’ Den, Mashonaland West, leaving the quiet community in shock.

The victims, Norbert Tayero and his wife Petronella, were found dead at their Sangwe farm in what authorities describe as a calculated and brutal attack. Reports indicate that the suspect may have sought cleansing rituals to ward off avenging spirits, known locally as *ngozi*, before fleeing with property from the homestead.

Alleged Planning and Deception

The suspect, identified as **Farai Chatikobo (40)**, was reportedly a relatively new worker at the farm. According to a colleague, **Jairos Dani**, Chatikobo allegedly planned the attack and lured him away from the homestead shortly before the murders.

“I was with him at the bar, and nothing seemed unusual. He bought me a beer and we chatted as usual,” Dani recalled. “I went home and slept, thinking the old couple had travelled because their car was gone. I had no idea they were lying dead inside. It’s something that will haunt me forever.”

Authorities say the suspect allegedly returned under cover of darkness to carry out the killings. **Inspector Ian Kohwera**, Mashonaland West police spokesperson, confirmed the ongoing investigations but withheld further details.

### Late-Night Confession to Sangoma

The case took a dramatic turn when Chatikobo reportedly visited **traditional healer Jonasi Tshuma** in Shackleton, seeking protection from *ngozi*.

“He came to me late at night, claiming he needed help for his brother in Mazowe who he said had killed someone,” Tshuma said. “But his story kept changing. Eventually, he admitted he was the one who needed cleansing, saying he had killed Mrs. Tayero.”

Realizing the gravity of the confession, Tshuma alerted local authorities through **councillor Innocent Mangwanya**, while keeping the suspect engaged until the police could respond.

### Manhunt and Community Shock

Despite a police roadblock, the suspect reportedly managed to evade capture. Authorities say he fled with a **Nissan Note**, livestock, and household property.

When officials and the community later entered the homestead, they found the bodies lying in pools of blood. Villagers described the Tayeros as devoted Christians known for their generosity and kindness.

The killings have left the farming community in mourning. Police continue to appeal for information as the manhunt for the suspect intensifies.
