Botswana Denies Presence of U.S. Military Base at Thebephatshwa, Urges Region to Reject Misinformation
By Staff Reporter

GABORONE** — The Government of Botswana has firmly rejected ongoing claims that a United States military base operates at Thebephatshwa Air Base, emphasizing that the installation remains تحت the full control of the Botswana Defence Force. The clarification comes amid heightened global scrutiny of U.S. military infrastructure following recent attacks on American facilities in the Gulf region.

In an official statement issued on 17 March 2026, authorities in Gaborone described the allegations as persistent misinformation with potentially serious diplomatic and security consequences, particularly during a period of increased international tension.

Government Position on Thebephatshwa

Moeti Mohwasa, Minister for State President, Defence and Security, unequivocally stated that Botswana does not host any foreign military base.

He affirmed that Thebephatshwa Air Base is a sovereign national facility, “owned, operated and controlled entirely” by the Botswana government through its defence forces. According to the minister, the base is dedicated to national priorities, including emergency response coordination, support for regional peacekeeping missions, humanitarian operations, and maintaining military readiness.

Government Communications head Tuduetso Mokgosi reinforced this position, noting that no foreign military entity maintains either operational control or a permanent presence at the installation.

## Concerns Over Regional Impact

Officials expressed concern that unverified claims could strain relations among neighbouring countries. In the context of ongoing tensions involving Iran and U.S. military assets in the Gulf, any perception of hosting American forces could expose countries to unintended geopolitical risks.

Mokgosi cautioned that misinformation—particularly when it spreads across borders—can foster unnecessary suspicion and undermine long-standing diplomatic trust within the region. While acknowledging the importance of open public discourse, the government stressed that matters of national security must be grounded in verified and accurate information.

## Addressing Ongoing Allegations

Although no individual was directly named in the latest statement, it appears to respond to repeated assertions by Julius Malema, who has previously claimed that Botswana hosts a U.S. military facility aimed at regional influence. These claims have been consistently dismissed by Botswana authorities.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Fenio Butale addressed parliament on 4 March, describing such allegations as both unfounded and potentially harmful to Botswana’s national security and international relations.

## Call for Responsible Communication

The government has urged media organizations, political figures, and public commentators to exercise due diligence when discussing defence-related matters.

Officials emphasized that the spread of inaccurate information not only misleads the public but also risks damaging diplomatic ties and regional stability.

## Commitment to Regional Cooperation

Despite frustration over recurring claims, Botswana reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong and respectful relations with neighbouring countries. Authorities underscored the nation’s continued dedication to regional cooperation, dialogue, and mutual trust.

The government concluded by reiterating its position: Thebephatshwa Air Base remains a Botswana-controlled military installation, serving national interests and contributing to regional stability—without any foreign military presence.
