Business Mogul Tagwirei Buys Presidential Car For Massive US$1.8 Million Bid
Harare – In a dazzling display of loyalty and deep pockets, local multi-millionaire businessman and Zanu PF financier Kudakwashe Tagwirei purchased a vintage car originally used by President Emmerson Mnangagwa for a staggering US$1.8 million (approximately R33.5 million) at a high-profile charity auction last night.

The eye-watering transaction took place during a glitzy ED-UNZA Scholarship fundraising dinner at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Harare, formally known as Meikles Hotel. The event, hosted by President Mnangagwa himself, was aimed at boosting funds for his scholarship trust, which supports academically gifted but underprivileged students at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and various state universities in Zimbabwe. Tagwirei was the highest bidder for the historic vehicle, with the entire proceeds going directly to the educational cause.

A Grand Gesture For Education
The auction of the classic car, which once ferried the Zimbabwean leader, became the highlight of an evening attended by the who’s who of the business elite and the President’s former classmates from Zambia. The event celebrated Mnangagwa’s alma mater, the University of Zambia, where he studied law during the 1970s.

Following the purchase, the move was hailed as a philanthropic masterstroke.

“Dr Tagwirei purchased the vehicle that was first used by President Emmerson Mnangagwa for US$1.8 million, immediately directing the entire amount toward the ED-UNZA Scholarship Fund, a transformative initiative designed to expand access to higher education for academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students.”

More Than Just A Car
Vintage cars are often seen as “rolling art” and appreciating assets, but this particular vehicle now carries the weight of political symbolism and educational hope. The President, who hails from the Chief Mapanzure area in Zvishavane, maintains strong ties to Zambia, a connection that made the beneficiary—UNZA—particularly poignant.

“In an ostentatious display of wealth, financial power and political loyalty – at least for a good cause – local multi-millionaire businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei last night brought a vintage car originally used by President Emmerson Mnangagwa for US$1.8 million,” reports The News Hawks.

By channelling such a significant amount of money into the trust, Tagwirei has reinforced his position as a key ally of the President while simultaneously funding the education of the next generation.

The ED-UNZA Scholarship Fund aims to bridge the gap for talented students who lack the financial means to pursue tertiary education, covering tuition, accommodation, and learning resources.
