President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), has promoted two Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General, following the advice of the Defence Minister and on the recommendations of the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

The officers elevated are Major-General Cephas Gurira and Major-General Funnie Mutizhe.

Major-General Gurira, formerly Commander of One Infantry Brigade, has been appointed ZNA Chief of Staff Administration, while Major-General Mutizhe, previously Senior Personal Staff Officer to the ZDF Commander, is awaiting a new assignment.

Conveying the new badges of rank, Commander ZDF Emmanuel Matatu commended the officers for their dedication, discipline, and loyalty to national duty.

"Your promotion comes after a board thoroughly scrutinised your ability and character. Recommendations were made all the way to His Excellency the President, who then consented to your promotion," Gen Matatu said. "It signifies your good standing in our profession. Promotions carry increased responsibility, and I have no doubt both of you are up to the task."

He urged the Major-Generals to rise to the challenges ahead, noting the increasing role of technology and artificial intelligence in modern military operations. "We have to keep abreast with technological advances in all aspects of our profession and build the capabilities necessary to fulfil our mandate," he said.

In response, Major-General Gurira thanked President Mnangagwa and the command element for the confidence and mentorship throughout their military careers. He pledged continued loyalty to the Constitution, the command structure, and the people of Zimbabwe.

"Cognisant of the continual trust and greater responsibility bestowed upon us, we resolve and undertake to add value to the ZDF by contributing to the attainment of its mandate and vision," Major-General Gurira said.
