A 37-year-old South African woman has appeared in court accused of staging her own kidnapping with two alleged accomplices in a scheme to extort R40,000 from her family.

Ntombifuthi Mavis Rumo faces a charge of defeating the administration of justice following investigations into her alleged abduction, which was reported to police on October 8, 2026.

Rumo was found injured along Vlakfontein Road, near Marikana informal settlement, after her family received a ransom demand through her cellphone. Police officers accompanied relatives to the location, where she was found with injuries to her hands and taken to hospital.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Rumo allegedly met Bonginkosi Mndebele, 27, and a third suspect on October 7. The trio allegedly agreed to stage the kidnapping because they were facing financial difficulties.

The suspects allegedly demanded money from Rumo’s family for her release. When the family failed to pay, they allegedly abandoned her along Vlakfontein Road and instructed relatives to collect her.

Police investigations subsequently raised suspicions that the kidnapping had been fabricated.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Rumo was arrested on October 20 after her husband brought her to the police. She later identified Mndebele to investigators.

Mndebele is also facing a charge of defeating the administration of justice but was unable to attend court because he was in hospital. The third alleged accomplice has not yet been charged.

The matter was postponed to October 29 at the Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court to allow for further bail investigations and Mndebele’s appearance.

The State intends to oppose bail for both accused.

Rumo and Mndebele remain accused persons, and the allegations against them have yet to be tested in court.
