Radio Zimbabwe's Macamarada now a prophet

HARARE — Former soldier and celebrated broadcaster Leonard Katsangu, popularly known as Macamarada, has taken his religious ministry beyond Zimbabwe, preaching across several African countries after rising to prominence as one of the country's recognisable radio personalities.

Katsangu became a household name during his time at Radio Zimbabwe, where his popular “5-Minute Zimbabwe Shout-Out” segment earned him widespread recognition.

The distinctive feature saw him mention locations from across the country within minutes, becoming one of the broadcaster's signature programmes and helping cement his popularity among listeners.

Katsangu later turned to religious ministry, saying he had responded to what he describes as a divine calling.

His ministry, which he has dubbed “The Divine Journey Across Africa,” has since taken him to several countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.

In South Africa, where he was already known among Zimbabweans living in the diaspora, Katsangu preached messages focusing on peace, unity and family restoration.

He also travelled to Kenya, where he shared teachings associated with the Johane Masowe church tradition and ministered to congregations in different communities.

In Tanzania, his messages centred on love, tolerance and spiritual renewal, while in Zambia he continued promoting unity and mutual respect through the message “Ida Anokuda”, meaning love one another.

His journey from military service to broadcasting and eventually religious ministry has attracted attention from supporters who view it as an unusual transition spanning three different spheres of public life.

Katsangu is now using the experience gained from reaching large radio audiences to connect with congregations beyond Zimbabwe's borders, taking his messages of faith, love, reconciliation and community to audiences across the continent.
