HARARE —A respected academic, human-rights commissioner, former military officer and technology expert is dead, his wife is also dead, and a storm of unanswered questions is now surrounding a tragedy that has shocked Zimbabwe.

Dr Engineer Martin Muduva, 42, and his wife Lyliosa Chirara, 43, died following a violent domestic incident at their Dzivarasekwa Extension home in Harare on Wednesday.

What began as a reported marital dispute ended in bloodshed, with Muduva allegedly suffering severe head and hand injuries while his wife reportedly ingested poison.

But behind the tragedy lies a dramatic story of love, alleged infidelity, a reported second relationship and lobola, with social media now awash with claims about what may have happened inside the couple's home.

THE OTHER WOMAN

At the centre of the storm isPatience Mangwiro, reported to be an MSU colleague of Muduva.

Several reports claim Muduva and Mangwiro had been in a relationship for several years and had a child together.

The most explosive claim is that Muduva had recently paid lobola for Mangwiro.

Photographs allegedly linked to the lobola ceremony reportedly circulated on social media, adding fuel to claims that Muduva was preparing to start another marriage.

It is alleged that the development devastated Chirara, who had reportedly been struggling with the relationship for some time.

However, police have not publicly established all these claims as fact, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged relationship remain part of the wider investigation.

THE FATAL NIGHT

According to reports, tension inside the Muduva household allegedly reached breaking point shortly after midnight.

A confrontation reportedly erupted between the couple.

Muduva was allegedly struck with an object, with several reports identifying it as an axe. He sustained serious injuries to his head and right hand.

Chirara reportedly ingested rat poison during the incident.

Neighbours were alerted and the couple were rushed for medical attention.

Chirara died, while Muduva was transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

And just like that, a marriage ended in two deaths.

WHATSAPP STATUS THAT MAY HAVE CHANGED EVERYTHING?

One of the most talked-about claims surrounding the tragedy involves WhatsApp.

Reports attributed to people close to Chirara allege that she had seen photographs connected to Muduva's reported lobola ceremony and was deeply distressed.

There are also claims that Muduva had posted material relating to the ceremony on his WhatsApp status before later removing it.

Whether the WhatsApp posts directly triggered the confrontation remains unknown.

For now, it remains one of the many unanswered questions surrounding the tragedy.

FAMILY LEFT SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS

The tragedy has left both families struggling to understand how a relationship that had lasted for years could end so violently.

Muduva's mother reportedly said her son had visited her shortly before his death and was expected to take her to a doctor's appointment the following day.

On Chirara's side, her brother reportedly said the family had not been aware of claims that Muduva had taken steps towards another marriage.

He described his sister as a soft-spoken woman and said the family was struggling to make sense of the conflicting information surrounding her death.

WHO WAS MUDUVA?

Muduva was far more than the man at the centre of a domestic tragedy.

He was a Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission Commissioner, a Midlands State University lecturer and a technology specialist whose professional interests included cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science and digital transformation.

His career placed him at the intersection of technology, human rights and education.

His death has therefore sent shockwaves beyond his immediate family, with colleagues and institutions mourning a man regarded as a prominent academic and human-rights figure.

RUMOURS, QUESTIONS AND A FAMILY DIVIDED

As news of the deaths spread, social media quickly produced its own version of events.

Claims have circulated about the alleged second marriage, the lobola ceremony, the WhatsApp status, the couple's marital problems and what happened in the final moments before the attack.

Some reports have even raised questions about an alleged note that Chirara may have written before her death.

But investigators still have the difficult task of separating evidence from rumour.

The public may have heard many versions of what happened, but the full truth can only emerge through the police investigation and other evidence.

AND NOW, THE BURIAL BATTLE

Even in death, the tragedy has reportedly created tensions between the two families.

Reports say the Muduva and Chirara families have faced difficulties agreeing on burial arrangements, forcing discussions over how the two should be laid to rest.

It is a bitter final chapter to a relationship that reportedly began when the two were young school sweethearts.

From teenage love to marriage, from professional success to alleged marital turmoil — the Muduva-Chirara story has ended in a tragedy that has left Zimbabwe asking one haunting question:
