Harare, January 28, 2026 — Acting President Dr Kembo Mohadi this morning presided over a high-level humanitarian aid handover ceremony in Harare aimed at assisting Mozambique following devastating floods that have claimed lives and displaced thousands.
The assistance follows an urgent appeal for support from the Government of Mozambique after widespread flooding caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes and agricultural land in several provinces.
According to a statement by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mrs Petronella Nyagura, the floods have severely affected the provinces of Gaza, Maputo, Maputo Metropolitan and Nampula, disrupting access to basic services and livelihoods.
“Preliminary reports from Mozambique’s disaster management authorities indicate that several lives have been lost, while more than 200 000 families and their crops have been affected,” Mrs Nyagura said.
The resource mobilisation and handover ceremony, organised through ZimAID, is drawing pledges and contributions from local donors and key stakeholders, reflecting Zimbabwe’s commitment to regional solidarity and collective disaster response in line with Africa’s shared humanitarian values.
Mozambican Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Carvalho Muaria, is attending the event, alongside senior Government officials and representatives from various institutions.
Earlier, the City of Harare announced the temporary closure of a section of Samora Machel Avenue to facilitate preparations and the official handover ceremony. The affected stretch, between Sam Nujoma Street and Simon Vengesai Muzenda Street, was closed from Tuesday at 4pm and is expected to reopen today at 1pm. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes and exercise caution.
Delegates began arriving early in the morning, with favourable weather conditions marking the start of the proceedings.
Acting President Mohadi arrived at the venue accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, and Ambassador Muaria, officially signalling the commencement of the ceremony.
The initiative underscores Zimbabwe’s support for Mozambique during a time of crisis and highlights the importance of regional cooperation in responding to natural disasters.
More details to follow as proceedings continue.
