Massive Explosion as Two Fuel Tankers Burst Into Flames in Bulawayo

By Online Reporter

Bulawayo was rocked by a massive explosion on Monday night after two fuel tankers caught fire in the Donnington Industrial Area along the intersection of Goderich Avenue and Masiyephambili Road.

The incident, which occurred near DA Service Station, is suspected to be linked to a fuel siphoning operation that went horribly wrong. The tankers, both fully loaded with fuel, erupted into flames, producing a huge ball of fire and a series of loud explosions that sent shockwaves across surrounding suburbs.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer, Mr Mhlangano Moyo, confirmed the incident and said firefighters battled the inferno for several hours as they worked to contain the blaze.

“We are at the scene and the situation is terrible. Two fuel tankers filled with fuel went up in flames, causing loud explosions. Several fire tenders were dispatched, and our teams have been working for hours to bring the fire under control. Investigations into the cause are ongoing,” said Mr Moyo.

Although no fatalities or injuries were reported, the explosions caused panic among residents in nearby suburbs including Tshabalala, Nketa, and Bellevue. Many took to social media to describe the blasts as sounding like a low-magnitude earthquake.

Residents closer to the industrial area reported shattered windows and strong vibrations from the explosions, while thick plumes of smoke were visible from various parts of the city.

Authorities have since secured the area as investigations continue into the exact cause of the fire.
